Pianist, guitarist, composer, arranger, songwriter, and music producer Timo Chen’s work can be heard on movies and TV shows such as The People’s Choice Awards, Sunset Stories, and Inseparable.  Timo is an alumnus of the Sundance Film Music and Sound labs at Skywalker Sound where he went on to score Jennifer Phang’s award-winning film, Advantageous. Alongside traditional musical pursuits, Timo is an avid experimenter of tools for making music, building all sorts of instruments and sonic devices to create unique , non-traditional textures that provides solid narratives to picture.

Emily came to me with a beautiful script and described to me that the soundtrack had to depict a sparkling romantic story about life’s connections and missed connections in Hong Kong. Having personally had my share of nights in Hong Kong many times over, I was delighted to work on this. My approach to the score was to deliver the notions of hope and disappointment over a soundscape that felt like Hong Kong…sparkles included. The underlying soundtrack bed starts with sparkling elements and moves on to feature a texture of Western and Asian instruments (but not in a non-touristy way). Poly-metric phrases to hint at missed connections and out-of-phase occurrences in life are highlighted, while the main “Ruby and Josh Theme” plays on unfulfilled hopes and desires.

As we went along developing the soundtrack, we were excited as it began to feel as if Hong Kong were becoming a character in the film. We were even more pleased at screenings later as audience members who had visited or lived in Hong Kong would comment on how the soundtrack sounded just like Hong Kong to them. I am grateful to Emily for her talents and vision and truly honored to have been chosen to be a part of this project.

An attraction forms when a Chinese American girl visiting Hong Kong for the first time meets an American expat who shows her the way, but timing may not quite be on their side. A walk and talk romance set in the beautiful city of Hong Kong, the film asks the question – what happens when you meet the right person at the wrong time?
