A lone robber, riding a different maxi scooter each time, robs one bank and a jewelry store after another, squeaking at great speed through the folds of Rome, between its ancient beauties and its urban archaeologists, always managing to sow its pursuers and finally vanish into nothingness.

The case is in the hands of a Roman commissioner, true and cynical who, failing to get to the head of it, asks for help from a friend of his Parisians, called the French, a former commissioner famous for his psychological insight and for resolving dozens of impossible cases. Everyone except for the death of their daughter, whose anniversary she returns to the city every year. He will discover the identity of the robber, a person who is as unsuspected as he is of great intelligence, with whom he engages in a challenge with unpredictable consequences.

        “Blue Eyes” experiments with genre in this personal rendition and tribute to the French Polar film. It is light on dialogue, heavy on atmosphere, with melancholy, romantic characters: two police chiefs, one robber, a scooter, a young mechanic… and the city. Rome and the waves of traffic coursing through its streets and the solitary, empty nights between Rome’s Pyramid, white as the moon, and the Coliseum at dawn keeping watch over challenges and revenge.

        There are no landscape shots. Each frame tells the story through the emotions they elicit. Indoor shots are minimalist. The architecture furnishes the places, playing with space and light. Much is understood about each character as they move through these intentionally empty spaces. The film was shot in wide-angle – typical of this genre – using CinemaScope, which provides depth and makes it necessary to choose certain points of view. In “Blue Eyes” we don’t need to see everything, just what helps create the story. Cinema is also about what you choose not to show. The photography is so “material” – emphasizing contrasts, details and distances – you can almost touch it.

Right from the beginning, the robber and her city are accompanied by the sound of a trumpet playing. The music, like all the sounds in the film, is very important, it moves the story forward, narrates, acts as a bridge for emotions. Then it stops, it’s gone, just like the robber, and as we await the ending, we are immersed in the smoky atmospheres of jazz and summer dreams to the sounds of swing.

        Genre films need talent because they follow the rules and techniques specific to filmmaking. A lot of talent went into the making of this film, from the actresses and actors Valeria Golino, Jean-Hugues Anglade and Ivano De Matteo, to Director of Photography Matteo Cocco, to composer Andrea Farri and his extraordinary soloists Paolo Fresu and Luigi Piovano, to Esmè Sciaroni, Grazia Materia, Fabrizio Nanni, Luca Servino and Filippo Porcari. All of them were asked to think of this film as a game, with the most serious attitude possible, and gracefully employ a style somewhere between a detective film and noir in order to understand the world and say something about ourselves.

Emmanuel Fricero (Réalisateur): Je collabore avec Franck Ancelin depuis 2008. Il m’a paru évident de lui confier la création musicale de la série “Nous Sommes en Guerre” pour lui conférer cette atmosphère anxiogène, confinée puis libératrice que je recherchais. 

Franck Ancelin (Compositeur): Emmanuel m’expose ses envies, l’histoire et l’univers de la série afin de dégager une ligne directrice qui donnera le ton. Ce Coronavirus est vraiment quelque chose de dramatique, au même titre que les maladies qui ont marqué les siècles passés. Je cherchais un doux mélange entre le déjà vécu (le passé), et ce que nous vivons (le présent). Si vous êtes attentifs à l’écoute de cette Bande Originale, vous entendrez sur tous les morceaux un léger effet de grésillement vinyle/radio comme à l’époque tel un message du passé. Je trouvais l’idée intéressante, cet effet est discret et suggéré puisqu’on l’entend de manière inconsciente. Pour moi, la musique de film doit faire parler les émotions.

With the reluctant help of LAPD detectives, Abby (Madeline Zima), Carl (Tony Todd), and Captain Duke (Keith David), the unlikely group become involved in the investigation. Jian and Abby fight against a high-tech criminal (Sean Patrick Flanery) looking to exploit the brother’s gifts in his own quest to power.

Les musiques de film d’action sont difficiles et souvent se borne a de l’habillage. Il y a eu les grands James Bond, dont on ne retient que le thème d’entrée et de fermeture de Lalo Shiffrin, il y a de grand absent, car c’est une musique qui épouse l’image a défaut d’épouser la musique elle-même. Le cinéma américain est exigeant et des compositeurs exige plus du Sound Design que du contenu mélodique. Il est un des compositeurs qui s’exerce au style avec panache : Sid de la Cruz. Dans une modestie qui n’appartient qu’a lieu, Sid est un de ces fabricant de magie et d’intemporalité. Sur le film INSIGHT, il a eu le courage du thème original, la palette du design et le regard de construire une bande originale, digne de ce nom. Il y a de la recherche, de l’innovation, les sounds, les thèmes. Sid De La Cruz a mis beaucoup de lui-même pour trouver le bon ton, le bon son.

Director’s Statement on Insight’s Original Soundtrack  

Statement from Livi Zheng & Ken Zheng Insight is a movie that includes several different cultures and also a story with elements of science fiction.  Therefore, it was impossible to imagine Insight without interweaving several different genres and categories of music. The instrumentals that augmented Insight’s story were heavy on electronic synths, strings, brass and percussion. I choose these musical scores to fit with the diverse martial arts styles of action scenes.  We even used special compositions to highlight our use of drones and other modern weapons as props in the movie. In the Warehouse Fight Club scene, staged in an underground caged fight in China, the music not only included the strings and brass but also the Guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument.  In theJian in Syria scenewe used instruments such as the Qanun, Riq, Darbuka, & Zil to reflect the local culture of the scene while remaining authentic. The soundtrack of Insight matches these scenes of the movie as an audio and visual is a journey through the world.

The score for Insight was fun to create. It’s a hybrid of orchestral and synth instruments. This is a bit different from my other scores in that it was requested not to use any woodwinds. Also, there were some cues where high strings were not used as well. I had to be creative and think of other ways to approach the music. Because the film deals with an element of science fiction, I feel that electronic instruments suit the film very well and help tell the story from the side of science fiction. Several of the cues tie in with photography of the film. For instance, in the track, “Apartment Fight”, some of the fighting leads to the kitchen. In the score, there are metallic instruments that help simulate kitchenware, pots, pans, silverware, etc. In the track, “Jian in Syria”, uses Middle Eastern melodic and percussive instruments are introduced and take and help contribute to the action music.

Au Xème siècle, le viking Rollon est banni de Norvège. Il voyage jusqu’en France où il deviendra le fondateur de la Normandie.

Pour Rollon, la musique devait d’abord représenter le côté viking et guerrier de Rollon, mais également le côté chrétien de l’évêque Francon qui arrangea le destin de Rollon. Les deux éléments cohabitent avec une couleur musicale basée sur des sons orchestraux mais aussi sur le cymbalum, la harpe, la flute et les chœurs.

Dans la série des péplums historique, un regard de Viking, manquait à cet appel du large. Un air vengeur parfume à l’aventure du grand large, l’aventure embarquée sur des Drakkars. Le premier Normand accosta et s’ensuivit une folie meurtrière mais aussi spirituelle. Rollon, le premier Normand est un brillant docu-fiction réalise par Alban Vian. La musique très présente de Maximilien Mathevon, mêlant le choc des enclumes galvanisant l’acier des armes naissantes. Des voix, des mouvements de piano et de violons pour retentir dans le grand mystère de la naissance d’une nouvelle ère. A mi-chemin entre l’eau et le ciel on se prend pour cette épopée féerique, un chevauchement de l’imaginaire dans le tintement des cymbales et le choc des armes. Dans le refrain des guerres et le chant des pionniers. Rollon a donne de la foi et de l’âme. Maximilien Matevon a donne de la voix et du relief aux regards bleus et éperdus de conquêtes.

L’émotion se mesure aux coups d’archets, sur les cordes d’orchestre symphonique ou philharmonique. Sandro Di Stefano écrit des scores de qualité et dirige des orchestres philharmoniques d’un coup de baguette qui devient magique sous sa main.

Ecrire une partition de loup garous, d’humains se transformant en loups et peut être inversement de loups dans le corps d’humains, cela peut paraitre presque facile, mais l’exercice est délicat pour ne pas tomber dans les cliches. Avoir l’imagination d’une mélodie c’est dans la digne tradition des compositeurs latins et encore plus lorsqu’ils sont italiens. Il y a de la fulgurance, de la passion, de l’envie et une extrême mélodie. C’est ainsi que se construise les grandes romances, les grandes partitions. La musique de film aujourd’hui est l’expression de grand ballet classique contemporains ou les références a l’image viennent en second plan d’un création unique et bien réelle. Voir Christophe Lambert dans les décors bleu nuit et d’un plateau fumant dans les ombres était déjà un plaisir annonce. Le voir paraitre sous la mélodie féroce d’un Sandro Di Stefano est un plaisir bien réel.

Statement about the OST

Music in Movie, for me, has always had an actor role.

I never think of music as such but of an actress I imagine and direct in the Movie.

In fact, I feel more a Film Director than a Musician because from music I look for what words don’t say. In “Shadow of the wolf”, I tried to put a face to this invisible actress and have her act alongside the other actors and actresses. In short, I put her in the cast, giving her an antagonist role. She participates in the dialogues, anticipates and delays emotions, sometimes she is a shoulder, sometimes she is the one who plays the main role. Stylistically, this music honors a certain writing of authors who invented the genre, such as Bernard Herrmann for example (also because Herrmann, like me, was heavily influenced by guys like Serghjej Prokofiev i Igor Stravinskij). Clusters, black and white, frequencies, help to recreate a certain sound, in a certain sense “old style”. I always direct my music myself because I know exactly what to ask for, as a Film Director does with his actress.

Statement about the OST (Film Director)

I have always considered music as my main ally to move the audience through the narrative arc of our story.

It is a role as important as the one of a key actor, albeit invisible.

Music is not just a comment, but rather a subliminal voice that whispers to the ears of the spectator. 

I have constantly worked with the composer, explaining the emotional struggle and the inner workings of the characters in the scenes, and it has been an extremely stimulating experience.

Great effort has been put also in researching uncommon blends of instruments, looking for something that could describe the characters and their emotional journey throughout the evolution of the story.

Each character has a theme and a sound that intertwines with the others creating a “dialogue”, a sonic footprint that profoundly defines the atmosphere of the film.

When Aadam, a camel trader in the Rajasthan desert, hears her sing, he falls desperately in love. But even before they can get to know each other better, Nooran is poisoned by a brutal treachery that sets her on a perilous journey to avenge herself and find her song.

La mélodie d’un Orient extrême. Des sonorités aux Indes mystiques c’est un déferlement, un regard de l’autre monde. Toutes les histoires, toutes les légendes s’ouvrent sur le livre de nos vies. Béatrice Thiriet a l’habitude des envolées symphoniques, elle a mis un bémol à ses partitions pour se changer a l’emoi d’instruments orientaux. Le talent et le dépaysement d’un scénario, soutenu par les voix aux portes du désert. Un regard différent sur des paysages colorés avec des acteurs parfumés d’histoires et de passions.
C’est un roman d’aventure, une symphonie de prophéties. Nous aimons faire partie de ce voyage.

Statement from Beatrice Thiriet

The song of scorpions is my second collaboration with the director Anup SINGH. 

 He proposed me this magnificent story in which the music is the main actress. 

  In this scenario the music is redemptive and source of life. It is the antidote to the deadly wound inflicted by the scorpion. 

Both life and death are domesticated in the film by the power of women shamans and musicians from which Noora (played by the sublime Golshiftheh Farahani) is born. 

This film is set in the desert and its perpetual movement. An apparent order on which the wind blows, sowing an invisible but permanent disorder. This daily disaster is embodied by a violent and intrepid camel driver played by the immense actor Irrfan Khan. 

It is the meeting of these two characters who will struggle in the expression of their love that inspired me musically. 

I mixed the sublime desert shots, the sounds of the Oud, the jaw harp or the double flute of Rajasthan with the lyrical accents of romantic, romantic or obsessive themes that I composed and orchestrated for a large symphonic formation. Wooden strings, brass and percussion, it is the whole orchestra that imposes itself in the folds of this love story that opposes animal cruelty and nobility of feeling. 

The originality of this score is that it oscillates between the original nudity and the stripping of the chamber music ensembles, particularly in the Oud jaw harp duo or the cello percussion duo, and the impressionism and refinement of contemporary orchestrations.

Musique ancienne et instruments de la région du pays basque ont aides a la déconstruction de ce mythe et a la construction d’une fresque romanesque. Le duo

Aranzazu Calleja et Maite Arroitajauregi a partage cette émotion, ses sonorités d’autrefois.

La bande son est un petit chef d’œuvre inventif, mélodique et spontanée comme des étincelles d’instruments baroques.

Porte par les interprétations sonores de Alos Quartet et par les voix puissantes de divers artistes. Ce sont des chants, ce sont des mélodies qui tournent dans la tête et dans la puissance des images.

1609, Basque Country (north to Spain). In a land full of pagan legends and ancient traditions, Judge Rostegui belonging the Spanish Inquisition is chosen by king Felipe III to be sent with a notary and a group of soldiers to purify all the region, traveling town by town to burn any woman with signs to be a witch. Obsessed to disclose the secrets of the infamous Sabbat (a theoretical feast where the witches make a ritual not only to summon The Devil, but to promise loyalty and mate with him) and denied to believe that it doesn’t exists in his absolute conviction that it’s for real, Rostegui arrives to an unnamed coastal village with no men (after they are sailors navigating by the sea) where five girls in their 20 years old are arrested: Ana, Olaia, María, Maider and the still teen Katalin. Not knowing the reason for the arrest, the girls are submitted to a hard interrogatory including torture to get the confession about they are witches and how it’s the ritual of Sabbat.

Notes on the music for Akelarre

My first objective was to retrieve the harsh, rebellious spirit of popular pagan music. And then to make it timeless: both ancestral and contemporary. To achieve this we started with a traditional melody, then we did arrangements for instruments from that period, but looking for the insolence, fury and fraternity that characterize the youth of all periods. During months of rehearsals, we gradually adapted the arrangements to the personalities and voice textures of the six actresses chosen after a casting of almost a thousand candidates. The final step was to create an evolution of that same song in different versions, ranging from the bucolic to the satanic, to reflect the demonization of the original culture.

From a similar way of making and thinking music, Akelarre has given us the opportunity to create a common musical place. A place in which two worlds are contrasted: that of the girls (sweet, poetic, set in interiors and with a deeper tessitura) and that of the judicial inquisitors (with high-pitched sounds and more bitter, oppressive atmospheres).

Alos Quartet give voice to our work with energy and elegance.

The Life Ahead est réalisé par Edoardo Ponti avec Sophia Loren, Ibrahima Gueye, Renato Carpentieri, Diego Iosif Pirvu, Massimiliano Rossi, Abril Zamora et Babak Karimi.

Dans les Pouilles, contre toute attente, une survivante de l’Holocauste qui s’occupe d’enfants se lie d’amitié avec un gamin des rues désabusé ayant tenté de la dévaliser…

THE LIFE AHEAD ou le titre original italien LA VITA DAVANTI A SE, est un film émouvant, qui ramène Sophia Loren à l’écran, le film qui est marqué par la musique originale de Gabriel Yared, est magnifique à regarder, la photographie créant une aura chaleureuse et éclatante pour une grande partie de la durée des films. Loren est comme toujours magnifique à regarder et dans ce rôle difficile où elle dépeint le personnage, Madame Rosa. Réalisé par Edoardo Ponti, oui c’est vrai Ponti, le fils de Sophia et de Carlo Ponti. La partition musicale est un accompagnement parfaitement gracieux et poignant à ce conte très émotionnel, ce n’est pas seulement sur la poignante et les propriétés thématiques subtiles cependant, il y a une poignée de beat up beat plus contemporain pistes infusées de hip hop dispersés partout, mais ce sont les poèmes musicaux romantiques et touchants qui impressionnent et attirent. Yared, est un compositeur si sous-estimé, mais à cette occasion, je pense qu’il va peut-être obtenir l’avis et le crédit qu’il mérite si richement, sa partition est de soutien, mais n’envahit jamais la ligne de l’histoire ou éclipse l’action à l’écran, recommandé. Les bandes sonores de jeux semblent dominer le marché des sorties de la fin de cette année, ce qui n’est pas une mauvaise chose parce que cela signifie que les partitions orchestrales /instrumentales atteignent une génération plus jeune. La maitrise mélodique, harmonique et culturelle est l’approche de Gabriel Yared dans chacune de ses partitions. On a ici un score fin délicat, mais on a aussi une page d’histoire et d’harmonie avec les premières notes de musique klezmer, de musique juive…. Essentielles pour comprendre l’histoire qui se joue sous nos yeux.

« J’ai commencé mon travail sur The Life Ahead peu de temps après qu’il a été tourné, mais il n’était pas encore entièrement édité ou terminé. Edoardo Ponti (réalisateur) est venu me voir à Paris en décembre 2019 pour discuter de ce qu’il cherchait en termes de musique. J’ai regardé le film et j’ai adoré tout de suite. Il a une douceur douce et la mélancolie, qui est très unique.

J’ai d’abord commencé à travailler sur mes thèmes, que j’ai partagés avec Edoardo, puis je les ai progressivement adaptés à des scènes spécifiques. Le thème le plus important était la « chanson hébraïque », qu’Edoardo appelle l’ADN du film. C’est une pièce que Madame Rosa écoute dans sa cave, lui rappelant ses parents et ses souvenirs d’enfance à Auschwitz.

Malheureusement, en raison des mesures de santé pandémique Covid-19, nous avons dû travailler à distance, moi à Paris et Edoardo à Los Angeles. Presque tous les jours, je lui envoyais mes conclusions et nous parlions de tout ensemble. Edoardo est très particulier avec ses choix, et tout comme moi, il a une persévérance presque obsessionnelle. Cela a donné lieu à une collaboration très productive, impliquée et raffinée. The Life Ahead est un film fantastique mettant en vedette Sophia Loren (la mère d’Edoardo), et je suis sûr que tout le monde le trouvera très émouvant, profondément redoutable et actuel.

On connait le sérieux des enquêtes menées par Jerome Korkikian : de Police Secours a aujourd’hui « De Charlie Hebdo au Bataclan », on entre par la petite porte d’une enquête douloureuse mais bien réelle.

Nous ne sommes pas là pour juger des positions des satires attardées de quelques soixante hui tard qui se drapent de la liberté d’expression au sein d’une rédaction aujourd’hui recale de Charlie Hebdo.
Nous sommes là pour ressentir le drame et la souffrance d’une jeunesse fauchée par les ires de la bêtise et de la naïveté.
Il fallait que des vies passent a trépas pour soulever l’émotion.
Et soulever aussi l’indignation de gouvernements successifs aussi lâche et désarmés les uns que les autres.
On en viendra a bout au terme de ces explications détaillées.
Puissent elles guider vers des résolutions meilleures et donc des jours meilleurs.

Ce film signé Jérôme Korkikian, et présenté par Carole Rousseau, plonge les téléspectateurs dans les coulisses de ces attentats perpétrés par des djihadistes d’Al-Qaida et de Daesh présentés comme une réponse aux provocations faites à l’islam et à son prophète, mais aussi comme un acte de vengeance vis-à-vis de l’engagement de la France contre ces groupes terroristes à l’étranger. Si la menace terroriste était connue, et redoutée, par les services de police et de renseignement, il n’a pas été possible de la déjouer.

Comment se sont déroulés les événements et quelle a été la réaction du pouvoir face à cette extrême violence ? Comment les forces de police se sont organisées pour chacune de leurs interventions ? Le documentaire «De Charlie Hebdo au Bataclan, les derniers secrets des attentats de 2015», donne la parole à celles et ceux qui se trouvaient aux premières loges de ces tragédies, notamment l’ancien président de la République, François Hollande, la maire de Paris, Anne Hidalgo, le ministre de l’Intérieur Bernard Cazeneuve, le procureur de la République François Moulins, ainsi que le général Denis Favier et Jean-Michel Fauvergne, le patron du RAID. Plusieurs victimes viennent également apporter leur témoignage bouleversant de l’horreur face au fanatisme religieux.
